Question #135: When did Brett Favre sign with Carolina?

January
11

I mean, did you see Jake Delhomme last night? Geez, is he retiring, too? That was one God-awful postseason performance, especially for a guy who’s not over the hill and who has a lot of experience.

The Giants better have been paying attention yesterday, paying attention to how quickly a season can end if you turn [...]

Question #134: Are these Giants better than last year?

January
10

I think the G-men have a better chance to win the Super Bowl in Tampa then they had of winning the one in Glendale last year. They’re missing, obviously, Michael Strahan, Osi Umenyiora, Jeremy Shockey, and Harris Smith, er, Plaxico Burress. But last year they were without Mathias Kiwanuka and Derrick Ward and Jeremy Shockey.

Who’s [...]

Question #132: What exactly are the Rangers?

January
8

A couple of summers ago, I wrote that the Rangers were about to throw giant gobs of money at two “B-list free agents” and Rangers fans were all over me. Chris Drury and Scott Gomez were two of the best three players available that July, 2007, they said. How dare you call them “B-listers?”

The point, [...]

Question #130: When’s the BCS?

January
6

I know the answer to that question is Jan. 8, which is this coming Thursday, which is a full week after New Year’s Day, which is when all the big college football games have always been played.

Which is why I’m really losing interest.

OK, I must confess I’m not a huge college football fan. I mean, [...]

Question #128: Who do you like?

January
2

Well, Sam, if you believe in momentum heading into the playoffs—and I don’t—then you should be in good shape as you prepare to make your NFL wild-card weekend picks.

I brought up the name Tony Romo (A-Rom) in wishing you’d choke away your one-game regular-season lead last week, and you performed like Tom Brady. Nice going.

I [...]

Question #127: So what would have happened …?

December
30

Isn’t it amazing how ultra-rich guys can say such stupid things. No, I’m not talking about the Steinbrenners.

Woody Johnson actually said this yesterday:

“It’s not a decision we reached (Sunday) or 10 minutes ago. This is a decision that was basically running through the season. We don’t take this decision lightly.”

So Question #127 is for Woody:

If [...]

Question #126: Is this the right move?

December
29

The Jets just fired Eric Mangini. He didn’t even last 24 hours from his/their last loss and playoff elimination, despite a second winning record in three years as head coach.

I’m not defending Mangini, especially this year, which included a woeful collapse and followed a dreadful ‘07. I’m not defending anybody, though, including Mike Tannenbaum the [...]

Question #125: Who do you like?

December
26

Well, well, well, Sammy. We’ve got a game after all. One week for all the peanuts. Sort of like the Jets, although the Jets need some help.

I had a 9-7 bounceback week to get back to .500 and to within a game of Sam, who did his Tony Romo (A-Rom) and went 4-12.

Anyway, the final [...]

Question #123: Tampa-bound?

December
22

Where are all those people, now, who made the Jets favorites in the AFC East when Brett Favre came aboard? Where are all those who upped the ante and the expectations when Tom Brady got hurt? And mostly, where are all those cockamamy knee-jerks who started talking about a Giants-Jets Super Bowl in Tampa [...]

Question #122: Who do you like?

December
19

Sam, you know I wish you no ill will, especially in this holiday season, but with two weeks left, I sure hope you go 3-13 twice.

Otherwise I don’t think I can catch you. Actually, I don’t think I can catch you if you go 3-13 twice the way I’m picking them now. I had a [...]
