Question #43: Maine? Pelfrey? Clemens?

August
20

The question this morning is simple, but the answer is extremely complicated. What would you do to fix the Mets bullpen assuming that Billy Wagner will not be back in a season in which the Mets could make the playoffs and have a shot at the World Series if they have a closer?

I don’t have the answer. There has been talk of John Maine going to the bullpen, but with his arm issues that’s not likely; and talk about moving Mike Pelfrey from the rotation. There’s talk about sticking with Aaron Heilman.

Or of trying to trade for somebody … but as someone on talk-radio said the other day, anybody who gets through waivers now either has a ludicrous contract or isn’t very good.

How about the Rocket? He could be ready to toss an inning here or there in a short time. He’d probably only need a couple of million, and a trainer who could fire some painkillers into his butt.

    Not a Mets fan.

At this point tho, Omar has nowhere to go but up from here. He gave away the farm to get Santana so I don’t believe the Mets have any internal options. There’s no trade options really worth getting that’d pass through waivers. But money – the Mets got so maybe it’d be worth taking on one of those heavy contracts and take a gamble. Certainly is a better idea than Heilman, Pelfrey or Maine. MLBTR said the Mets didn’t claim Weathers – which I think is a mistake… but why not Riske? Suck it up and pay the man – it’s better than what you got right now and hey – it’s only money right?

As for Clemens… wasn’t their old trainer the one getting the drugs in the first place?? Shouldn’t be hard to track him down and hire him back eh? Maybe Clemens and Pavano can become charter members of the Jabbed and Injured Buttocks Society (JIBS).

The only way I’d see Minaya getting Clemens is if he took a couple of those Clemens shots himself – and then smacked his head against a brick wall for several hours.

As a Yank fan, I can tell you that Minaya should ask Cashman for Pavano. Maybe a deal could be worked out…

    end dream…

I also hear Igawa and Giambi are available too…

Hear that Minaya?? Take a gamble!!!
